European welding equipment and consumables manufacturers are raising the alarm over increasing market pressure from imported products that fail to meet EU safety and performance standards. According to the European Welding Association (EWA), some of these products are entering the market at prices below European production costs—undermining fair competition and exposing users to potential safety risks. While European producers strictly follow directives and national regulations, some importers are bypassing these essential requirements.

The issue extends beyond pricing. Non-compliant imports often lack CE marking, essential safety documentation, and proper traceability. This not only puts users at risk but also threatens the credibility of responsible manufacturers who invest in regulatory compliance and product reliability. EWA warns that the use of such equipment can lead to reduced performance, workplace hazards, and long-term costs for both businesses and individuals operating in the welding industry.

For several years, European producers of welding equipment and consumables have been subject to unfair competition from products that do not comply with European directives, standards, and national regulations and enter the European market at prices below their production costs. Equipment, in particular, can present significant risks to users. Below are two documents published by EWA: The position of the industry, represented by EWA, regarding the unfair competition to which it is subject. A reminder of importers' obligations, which is an abstract from the 2022 Blue Guide on the implementation of the product rules published by the European Commission.

To counter these risks, EWA supports enforcement actions and greater scrutiny of importer responsibilities. Citing the European Commission’s 2022 “Blue Guide,” the association reminds importers that they are legally required to verify product conformity, maintain technical documentation for a decade, and withdraw or recall unsafe products. Failing to do so exposes both companies and users to regulatory penalties and avoidable danger.

For Europe’s welding professionals and industrial buyers, the message is simple: price alone shouldn’t determine procurement decisions. Supporting compliant, safety-focused manufacturers helps sustain not just local industry, but also the health and reliability of welding operations across the region. With clearer importer obligations and stronger enforcement, the market can return to a balance where safety, performance, and fair competition are equally valued.
