New EWA President Eyes Skilled Talent and Green Welding

The European Welding Association (EWA) has elected Harald Scherleitner as its new president for the upcoming two-year term—an appointment that comes at a time when welding faces both major pressures and significant transformation. Scherleitner, Chief Sales Officer at Fronius, was unanimously chosen during the 2025 General Assembly in Copenhagen. His focus is clear: closing the skilled labor gap, cutting CO₂ emissions, and improving occupational safety in welding—all areas the industry must address to remain viable and future-ready.
Scherleitner brings more than welding credentials to the table. His background spans photovoltaics and energy systems for intralogistics, allowing him to link welding’s traditional roots with next-gen technologies. That’s particularly relevant as welding increasingly intersects with renewable energy, digitalization, and the circular economy. His agenda suggests a holistic approach: pushing for stronger industry collaboration, advancing safety standards, and reshaping the profession to attract younger, tech-literate talent.

The EWA’s leadership transition signals a wider shift within the sector. With Europe’s industrial base under pressure to modernize and decarbonize, welding will remain a cornerstone technology—if it can evolve. Strengthening the visibility and appeal of welding careers may be just as critical as technical innovation. The message from the new presidency is clear: the welding trade can—and must—be both sustainable and future-forward, without losing its skilled core.
