Stephan Egerland has been elected President Elect of the International Institute of Welding (IIW), marking a significant moment for Austrian welding expertise. With more than 25 years at Fronius and a long track record in international welding commissions, Egerland’s election brings an Austrian representative back into one of the most respected honorary roles in the industry. Beginning in 2026, he will serve a three-year term as IIW President, a position often referred to as the “welding pope” for its influence in shaping global welding standards and practices.

The IIW plays a central role in unifying national welding societies worldwide, from the American Welding Society to the German Association for Welding Technology. It establishes guidelines for training, research, and safety applications that impact critical sectors like bridge and pressure vessel construction. These standards form the backbone of many national courses and certifications, making the IIW presidency a key driver of how welding is taught and practiced internationally.

Preparations are already underway for the 2026 IIW Annual Assembly, which will be held in Salzburg. The event is expected to bring together more than 1,000 experts from over 100 countries to share research and discuss emerging technologies like WAAM and manual laser welding. Fronius will serve as a platinum sponsor, underscoring Austria’s commitment to the global welding community.
